Bungie has announced its next game at the PlayStation Showcase 2023. It is Marathon, a shooter from the 90s that took a slightly different direction than its peers: a lot of world-building, narrative, very long texts giving meaning to everything that was happening; you get the idea. So much so that its universe has been repeated in one way or another in all the games that the Washingtonian developer has released since then. but his reboot it will be very different a “PvP extraction” we assume in the style of Escape from Tarkov.
The first trailer is not particularly explanatory in terms of mechanics, so for now we have to make do with the information on the official Marathon website: “become a runner in Bungie’s new sci-fi PvP extraction shooter, Compete for survival, riches and renown in a world of ever-evolving persistent zones; in which any game can lead you to greatness”. It plans to reach PC and next-generation consoles with support for cross play and cross save confirmed.
The official Bungie blog leaves us with more details, such as that the renewed Marathon will have global data centers, dedicated servers and severe anti-cheat measures —things that Destiny 2 fans have been missing for years— and those responsible assure that it will not be necessary to have played the previous ones to understand their universe, qualifying that veterans will find really interesting details. Not surprisingly, the title is directed by Christopher Barrett, who is one of the highest representatives of the studio’s old guard.
This is an interesting read that you should do to get an idea of how the parents of Halo and Destiny are going to encompass the story. narrative or the accessibility problems that are usually attributed to the genre, although we will not see it in action again until it is much closer to its launch (no window announced at the moment) and it can be seen with material gameplay. We’ll settle for knowing it’s coming to Steam.
