The last two tickets that remained to be distributed for the Copa del Rey basketball (from February 16 to 19 in Badalona) were awarded this Sunday by Gran Canaria and Valencia Basket, thus joining Madrid, Barça, Tenerife, Baskonia, Unicaja and Joventut. The Canarian team beat the hosts of the tournament, Joventut, 75-91, while the Valencian team did their homework by defeating Zaragoza 88-76 on their court, in a clash in which Shannon Evans debuted in the Mumbrú’s group and that the locals came to dominate by 30 points. Breogán stayed on the road, who fell on Madrid’s pitch (91-73); Bilbao Basket, defeated at the Palau by Barcelona (88-78); Obradoiro, despite their great victory against Baskonia (91-86), which ended the streak of nine wins for the team from Vitoria and knocked them off the top of the League; and Murcia, despite beating Fuenlabrada (72-88).
Madrid, Barça, Tenerife and Baskonia are seeded in the draw that will take place this Monday at 12:00, while Unicaja, Gran Canaria, Joventut and Valencia will be in the second pot. The Canarian team returns to the Cup for the first time since 2018, and the Valencian has now 11 consecutive appearances.
Barcelona defends the title won last year in Granada, coming back from 16 points against Madrid (59-64) and with Mirotic as the best player in the final. The Barça team has won four of the last five editions of the Cup, deciding in their favor a one-on-one with the Madrid team, which in recent editions has become a duopoly. Between 2000 and 2009, the cup tournament crowned five different teams (Tau, Estudiantes, Joventut, Barcelona and Unicaja), but since the Baskonia team won in that last edition, glory has only gone to Barcelona or Madrid. In this period, there are seven Barcelona crowns and six white ones, an eternal face to face, and only Unicaja, Gran Canaria and Valencia have managed to sneak in as finalists.
